Tom Milhorn grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee and now resides in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1960 with majors in mathematics and physics. In 1964 he received a PhD in physiology and biophysics from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in biomathematics at North Carolina State University. In 1975 he obtained his MD from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and subsequently completed a family medicine residency. In 1987 Dr. Milhorn was certified in addiction medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

His wife, Kay, is a former neurological/neurosurgical nurse specialist. Their son, Toby, is a graphic designer in Huntsville, Alabama, and a stepson, Steve, is a TV-commercial producer and director in Huntsville, Alabama.

Tom retired from the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1992 with the ranks of Professor of Family Medicine, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. At the time of retirement he was board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and certified in Addiction Medicine by the Society of Addiction Medicine.

Moving to Meridian, Dr. Milhorn did private practice for five years, followed by four years of Addiction Medicine and General Medicine at East Mississippi State Hospital.

Dr.  Milhorn is now permanently retired, except for reading, writing, web design, teaching three computer courses, giving occasional presentations, working out, keeping up with University of Kentucky basketball and various other hobbies.

2005 Inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University alumni Literary Hall of Fame.

2002 Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The Authoritative Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Counselors made The Top 20 Best Read eBooks List by Questia Media.

1998 Caduceus Awry was a finalist in the novel competition of the Eudora Welty Film and Fiction Festival.

1994 Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The Authoritative Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Counselors made the Academic Top-twenty Best Seller List.

1989 “Nicotine Dependence” was selected by the American Academy of Family Practice as one of the top four articles written by a family physician.

1976-2002 Appointed at various times to the editorial review boards of the American Journal of Physiology, the Biomedical Engineering Journal, the American Family Physician, and the Family Practice Research Journal.
